How Web3Tube ranks crypto videos

Web3Tube ranks a video by how often credible people in builder and research communities have recommended it, across years and across communities. Views, likes on YouTube and follower counts are never used.

Build of 3 November 2026 · 1,715 videos in the catalog · every mentioned video that still exists has been labelled.

The pipeline

Each step writes a file the next one reads, and each can be rerun without repeating finished work.

Crawl the communities

Public Discourse forums (newest posts first) and Hacker News via the Algolia API. Each post keeps its author, the author's forum trust level, date, likes and the thread it sits in.

make crawl · make social

Find the videos

Every YouTube link is normalised to its 11-character video id. The sentences around the link and any direct replies to the post are kept as the mention's context.

make extract

Fetch YouTube details

Title, channel, description, duration, captions flag, and whether the video is public and embeddable, from the YouTube Data API. Nothing is downloaded. Deleted and private videos drop out here.

make enrich

Label every mention with Claude

One Claude Haiku call per video sees its metadata and all its mentions. It labels each mention, quotes the evidence word for word, flags self-promotion, and judges the video's technical depth, audience, shill risk and whether it is still current.

make classify

Tag stance and topics

Two small Claude passes over the catalog: one tags each video's stance toward crypto (critiques get their own shelf), the other picks its topics from a fixed list.

make stance · make retopic

Score and filter

Six weighted signals, then anti-shilling penalties, the crypto-relevance filter and the inclusion rules below. The result is web/catalog.json.

Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript on Cloudflare Pages. No login; saved videos and preferences stay in your browser. Every video shows the posts that put it there.

The community weight scales how much one recommendation from that place counts. Research forums count most; governance forums and large community forums count less because more of their links are announcements, community calls and promotion.

Conference and ecosystem talks are used as seeds: 24,391 videos from the Devcon Archive, StreamETH event recordings (ETHGlobal, ETHDenver, Devcon and dozens more) and the YouTube channels of Solana (Breakpoint), Polkadot, Parity (Sub0), the Ethereum Foundation, ETHGlobal and the Zero Knowledge podcast (zkSummit). A seed marks a video as a conference talk and adds a small bonus, but a seed alone never puts a video in the catalog.

How each mention is labelled

A link is not an endorsement. Most forum links are meeting recordings, announcements or passing references, so Claude reads the words around each link and picks one label. The number is how much that label counts toward a recommendation.

Recommendation

× 1.0

The author endorses it or relies on it as a trusted source: "great talk on X", "this explains it well".

Neutral reference

× 0.35

Cited without a judgement: call recordings, "here is the recording", reading lists.

Criticism

× 0

Says the video is wrong, misleading or outdated. Counts against it in discussion quality.

Promotion

× 0, penalised

Marketing, shilling, referral spam, or advertising one's own product or event.

Unrelated

× 0

The link is incidental, or the text says nothing about the video.

Separately, a mention is flagged as self-promotion when the author appears to be the speaker or uploader. Those count at a quarter of their weight.

How much one voice counts

Each person gets one vote per video, their strongest mention. The weight of that vote is:

vote = label weight × strength (0.3–1.0, from Claude)
     × author credibility
     × community weight
     × 0.25 if self-promotion

author credibility = 0.7 × forum trust level (TL0 0.3 · TL1 0.5 · TL2 0.75 · TL3 0.9 · TL4 1.0; staff +0.1)
+ 0.3 × how established (log of the author's posts with videos, full at 50)

Votes are summed per community with diminishing returns, and no single community may supply more than 60% of a video's recommendation weight. Each author who promoted the video subtracts 0.5.

The six signals

Each signal is a number from 0 to 1. The score is their weighted sum. These weights are the starting proposal and have not been tuned against real outcomes yet.

Independent credible recommendations30%

The vote total above, saturating so that the first few strong voices matter most.

Technical depth25%

Claude's judgement of the video from its title, description and the discussion around it.

Discussion quality15%

Recommendations against criticism, each weighted by strength and author credibility. 0.5 means neutral.

Recommended across years15%

Distinct calendar years with an endorsing voice. Four or more years scores full marks.

Captions and still current10%

Half for having captions, half for Claude's "still current" judgement. Transcripts are not fetched, so this is a proxy.

Engagement on the recommending posts5%

Likes on the forum posts that recommend the video, log-scaled. YouTube views are never used.

Separate shelves

A small Claude pass tags each catalog video's stance. Videos that argue against crypto or the industry (39 of them, such as James Mickens' "Blockchains Are a Bad Idea") go on a "Critiques & skeptics" shelf. Market and trading content (59 videos) goes on a labelled Markets shelf. The remaining 1,617 videos fill the builder shelves. Critiques and markets stay off those shelves but can still be found through search.

Topic tags

Each video carries one to three topic tags, which drive the topic tabs on the home page.

The largest tags in this build: Governance 553, Cardano 533, History & culture 329, Developer tooling 309, Zcash 187, Bitcoin 186, Privacy 165.

Coverage notes and known gaps

complete

Zcash Community Forum. Crawled back to its first post.

stopped early

Cardano Forum. Crawled from newest back to 173,750 posts, then stopped by choice; its oldest years are missing. Its weight is lowered to 0.4 because much of it is community chatter.

seeded

Solana, Polkadot and Parity channels. Now seeded from @solana (Breakpoint), @polkadotnetwork and @paritytech (Sub0).

empty

a16z crypto channel. Its old YouTube channel has no uploads, and its successor is not crypto-specific, so it is not seeded.

blocks crawlers

Aptos Forum. Answers every automated request with "too many requests", even at one request every four seconds.

shut down

Avalanche and Filecoin forums. Both domains no longer exist. Filecoin moved its discussions to GitHub; Avalanche now has only a community web page.

needs credentials

Reddit, GitHub, Farcaster and X. Reddit refuses anonymous requests, and the other three need API keys. Adding them would especially help Solana and the Move chains, which our current sources barely discuss.
